Strategic Alliance Formation: Developing a Framework for Research

چکیده

This paper summarizes the wide and fragmented literature on strategic alliance formation. A framework is developed to organize the extant literature into antecedents, motives and objectives of alliance formation, and incorporates five relevant theories to explain a firm’s motives to form an alliance. The definition and delineation of the framework stages helps to categorize the literature and identify gaps in both empirical research and in explanatory theories. To that end, a research agenda is proposed to further develop a theoretical understanding of strategic alliance formation, and to provide a basis for improved assessment of the success or failure of strategic alliances.
